According to the latest comprehensive sales data released by the China Passenger Car Association, domestic narrow-definition passenger car sales in March reached 1.74 million units, down 12.1% year-on-year. This marks the 10th consecutive month of year-on-year decline in sales. Compared with the year-on-year decline since the fourth quarter of 2018, sales have shown a relatively positive trend of gradual recovery in recent months.

In the first quarter of 2019, cumulative sales reached 5.077 million vehicles, a year-on-year decrease of 10.5%. The consumption pattern continues to show that luxury cars are growing faster than mainstream joint-venture brands, while mainstream joint-venture brands are growing faster than domestic brands.

 

Among them

·In March, passenger car sales reached 857,000 units, down 12.0% year-on-year but up 48.9% month-on-month. For the first quarter, cumulative sales totaled 2.504 million units, a decrease of 7.4% year-on-year.

·In March, MPV sales reached 130,000 units, down 20.2% year-on-year but up 45.9% month-on-month. For the first quarter, cumulative sales totaled 371,000 units, a decrease of 19.3% year-on-year.

·In March, SUV sales reached 753,000 units, down 10.7% year-on-year but up 47.8% month-on-month. For the first quarter, cumulative sales totaled 2.202 million units, a decrease of 12.2% year-on-year.

·In March, sales of narrow-definition new-energy passenger vehicles reached 106,000 units, representing a year-on-year increase of 101.3% and a month-on-month increase of 127.2%. Cumulative sales for the first quarter totaled 249,000 units, up 120.1% year-on-year.

 

Vendor Ranking

Data show that in March, the composite sales growth rate for narrowly defined passenger vehicles was -12.1%, while the average growth rate for the top 15 automakers was -5.7%. In the first quarter, the cumulative growth rate for narrowly defined passenger vehicles was -10.5%, and the average growth rate for the top 15 automakers was -6.7%. Looking at the rankings, in March, SAIC-Volkswagen, FAW-Volkswagen, and SAIC-GM ranked among the top three in overall sales. Among the top 15 automakers, eight achieved positive growth, with Japanese brands showing strong year-on-year growth. Beijing Benz and Brilliance BMW continued to move up the ranks, while BYD made its debut in the top 15—each of these companies helped drive the recovery of the automotive market in March.

Sedan Ranking

In March 2019, the top ten best-selling sedans were, in order: Sylphy, New Lavida, Jetta, Corolla, Santana, Civic, Emgrand, All-new Excelle, Roewe i5, and Accord. Among them, the Sylphy topped the sales charts for March, with sales reaching 38,511 units—a year-on-year increase of 26.1%. Notably, the Roewe i5 saw a staggering 2,447.9% increase in sales in March.
